In an earlier blog post, I wrote about everything that needs to happen before work on the site can even begin. Today, we go one step further. Many clients are especially excited at this stage – eagerly waiting to see their plans become reality. But what exactly happens after those first days of preparation? Here's a look behind the scenes, and why we choose to work without heavy machinery.
A Clean Start: The Preparation
Everything begins with stripping the grass and topsoil layer. This is critical: organic material left under a foundation will rot over time, leading to dangerous settling or moisture problems down the line. We're quite literally giving the build a clean slate.
The String Line: The Skeleton of the Site
Once the area is cleared, we set up the string line framework. This precision work defines, to the millimeter, exactly where every wall will stand. Our rule: measure three times, build once – because mistakes in the foundation run through the entire house.
Why We Dig by Hand
For single-family homes, we deliberately skip the large excavators. There are two reasons for this:
Precision over bulk removal: With spades, we dig exactly to specification without disturbing the surrounding soil unnecessarily.
Soil reading: Since we don't commission a separate geotechnical survey, manual digging is our most important quality control. We "read" the soil with every stroke of the spade, digging until we reach a genuinely load-bearing layer.
The Hidden Heart: Pipes and Moisture Protection
Before any concrete is poured, we lay the main water and drainage pipes at precisely calculated gradients. At the same time, we install the first vapor barrier. This barrier stops moisture from rising out of the ground – the best possible protection for a healthy indoor climate and permanently dry walls.
The First Milestone: The Foundation Slab
Only once the reinforcement steel has been hand-tied and the waterproofing is perfectly in place do we pour the concrete. At this moment, earthwork transforms into a real structure. The foundation slab is the bedrock of your living dreams – and the culmination of this critical phase.
You won't see any of these steps later, but they determine whether your house stays crack-free. For us, this level of care isn't a standard – it's our most important quality commitment.
